Shopify's $119B quarter, read next to Amazon and eBay

Shopify reported Q3 GMV up 29% on November 3 and the stock fell anyway. Put the number next to Amazon's and eBay's quarters and you get a clear picture of where a brand's next dollar should go.

The short answer

Shopify reported third-quarter 2026 results on November 3, 2026: gross merchandise volume of $119.1 billion, up 29% year over year, and revenue of $3.74 billion, up 32%. Shares fell because GMV and subscription revenue came in below analyst estimates. Set against Amazon's Q3 (third-party seller services up 9%, advertising up 11%, with Q4 ad growth guided to the high teens) and eBay's Q3 (GMV up 15%), the useful move for a brand is to measure every channel on the same number, total ad cost against total revenue.

Shopify reported third-quarter results on Tuesday, November 3, 2026. Gross merchandise volume was $119.1 billion, up 29% from $92.0 billion a year earlier. Revenue was $3.74 billion, up 32%. Free cash flow margin was 22%.

The stock fell on the day. CNBC's read is that GMV came in just under the $120.03 billion StreetAccount estimate, and subscription revenue and gross profit missed too. Shopify president Harley Finkelstein called the GMV result "consistent" and "durable" on air and said the company would "ignore the noise day to day."

We don't manage Shopify stores. We manage brands that sell on Shopify and Amazon and Walmart at the same time. So the question we care about is what the three Q3 reports now on the table say about where a brand's incremental dollar is working hardest going into the 2026 holiday season.

The three quarters side by side

Each company reports a different thing. Shopify reports the GMV its merchants process. Amazon reports the revenue it earns from third-party sellers in fees and services, plus its advertising line. eBay reports GMV and its own ad revenue. None of these is the same thing as a brand's sales, so read the chart as direction, not as a league table.

Shopify and eBay figures as reported. Amazon figures as reported; Amazon says net sales growth would have been about 400 basis points higher without Prime Day shifting into Q2 for most large countries, and that Q3 advertising growth was affected by the same timing. Sources: Shopify, eBay and Amazon Form 8-K exhibits.

Shopify's merchant solutions revenue, the part that scales with volume rather than with subscriptions, grew 35% to $2.9 billion. Subscription revenue grew 20% to $836 million. That mix suggests existing merchants selling more, rather than growth coming mostly from new storefronts. Finkelstein's line in the release was that Shopify is building "commerce into every surface, every agent," which reads as a company treating AI shopping agents as a channel rather than a threat.

Amazon's 9% on third-party seller services looks soft until you remember that Prime Day was in Q3 in 2025 and in Q2 in 2026. Amazon put the net sales impact at roughly 400 basis points. Paid units still grew 12%, and third-party sellers were 61% of them. The guidance is the part to plan around: Amazon said it expects Q4 advertising revenue to grow in the high teens. That's more money chasing the same placements in the quarter that matters most.

eBay's $575 million in first-party advertising, up 16%, got the least attention of any number in the three reports. For a brand with a real secondary-market or refurbished presence, eBay's ad product is growing at least as fast as its marketplace, and it's worth a test.

Our read: the channel debate is the wrong debate

The filings don't support a "DTC is back" story or an "everything is moving to Amazon" story, and the brands we work with don't behave that way either. They run both. The consumables brands we know best sell on their own site because that's where the subscription economics are cleanest, and on Amazon because that's where the category's shoppers go to search. The site builds the list and the margin. Amazon builds the volume and, increasingly, the awareness through Sponsored Brands video and Prime Video.

The usual failure is measuring the two channels differently. Shopify gets judged on contribution margin after a Meta campaign. Amazon gets judged on ROAS inside the console. Nobody ever puts the two on one page, so budget moves on whichever dashboard had a better week. We've written before about why ROAS is the wrong number for a consumables brand; the same logic applies across channels. One number, total advertising cost as a share of total revenue, set from your real margin, applied to every channel the same way.

How most brands compare channelsHow we'd compare them
Shopify judged on blended ROAS from Meta and GoogleEvery channel judged on ad cost as a share of its total revenue, organic included
Amazon judged on in-console ROAS, branded search includedBranded search stripped out before anyone compares acquisition cost
Budget moves monthly to the dashboard that looked bestBudget moves quarterly to the channel with the best margin after fees and returns
Marketplaces treated as a sales channelMarketplaces treated as a sales channel and a discovery channel, and credited for both

What this means for Q4 planning

Shopify's own holiday reporting will tell you how DTC did. Amazon's guidance that ad revenue will grow in the high teens suggests ad auctions will be more expensive than they were in Q4 2025. eBay's numbers say the long tail of marketplaces has ad inventory worth testing.

Before Black Friday 2026

  • Set one TACoS target from your real margin and apply it to Shopify, Amazon and any other marketplace you run. If a channel can't hit it, that's the conversation to have, not which dashboard looks better.
  • Assume Amazon CPCs rise through November 2026. Pull non-branded Sponsored Products bids back to a CAC ceiling now and let branded terms absorb the inflation, not the acquisition budget.
  • If you have a refurbished, open-box or secondary-market story, open an eBay ads test with a small budget and a full quarter to read it. The growth rate says the inventory is worth a look.
  • Write down the measurement window for every holiday test before spend starts. The Q4 noise undoes most tests that weren't framed in advance.

If you're launching or expanding on a marketplace for the first time, the setup sequence that avoids the common Q4 mistakes is in our marketplace launch and expansion work, and the Amazon-specific detail is on our Amazon page.

Common questions

Why did Shopify's stock fall if GMV grew 29%?

Because analysts expected slightly more. CNBC reported GMV of $119.15 billion against a StreetAccount estimate of $120.03 billion, and subscription revenue of $836 million against a FactSet estimate of $848.1 million. The business grew fast. It grew a little less fast than the market had priced in.

Is Amazon's third-party business slowing?

Amazon reported third-party seller services revenue up 9% and paid units up 12%, and said net sales growth would have been about 400 basis points higher without Prime Day moving into Q2 in 2026. Read the 9% with that shift in mind.

Should a DTC brand move spend from Shopify to Amazon?

Not as a reflex. The right split depends on your margin after fees on each channel, your repeat rate, and where your customers already search. The useful move is to measure both channels the same way, on total ad cost as a share of total revenue, and let the numbers decide.

What did Amazon guide for Q4 advertising?

Amazon said it expects advertising revenue to grow in the high teens year over year in the fourth quarter of 2026, after 11% growth in Q3.
