The short answer
Amazon is limiting third-party AI shopping agents on Amazon.com and positioning its own assistant as the main way to shop its store with AI. It blocked Meta's Muse agent on September 20, 2026, its robots.txt disallows OpenAI, Google, Meta and Perplexity agents, and on October 29, 2026 Andy Jassy said Alexa for Shopping would be "the primary shopping agent" on Amazon. Amazon says over 400 million customers used Alexa for Shopping in the 12 months to October 2026. For brands, the agent that matters on Amazon is Amazon's own.
Amazon's recent moves on AI shopping point one way: outside agents out, its own agent in.
On September 20, 2026, Amazon cut off Meta's new Muse agent from shopping on Amazon.com. On October 29, 2026, Andy Jassy told analysts that Alexa for Shopping would be the primary shopping agent customers use to shop Amazon. The same day Amazon gave Alexa for Shopping more than 100 new actions, including skipping and pausing Subscribe & Save deliveries.
For a brand, that settles a question many teams have been arguing about through 2026. The agent that will read your Amazon listings and act on your subscribers' behalf is Amazon's.
What Amazon has done to outside agents
Amazon blocked Meta's Muse agent on Sunday, September 20, 2026, twelve days after Muse launched, according to reporting from SiliconANGLE and The Next Web. Muse users saw a pop-up: "Continued access by an unauthorized AI agent violates Amazon's Conditions of Use, to which our customers have agreed." Amazon spokesperson Lara Hendrickson said third-party apps should "operate openly and respect service provider decisions about whether or not to participate." She added: "Agentic third-party applications such as Muse have the same obligations."
Muse isn't the only one. Amazon's robots.txt file, which tells automated visitors what they may access, disallows OpenAI's GPTBot, ChatGPT-User and OAI-SearchBot, plus agents from Google, Meta and Perplexity, as of November 4, 2026. The Next Web reports that Amazon added a section on AI agents to its Conditions of Use on May 30, 2025.
The legal picture is still forming. In Amazon's case against Perplexity over its Comet browser, the Ninth Circuit on August 4, 2026 vacated the preliminary injunction Amazon had won. It found Amazon unlikely to succeed because, on the facts before it, the user, not Perplexity, accessed Amazon's computers under the anti-hacking laws Amazon relied on. In a footnote, the court wrote that the outcome "does not impair Amazon's ability to regulate access to Amazon.com via private terms of service for its users." That's the route Amazon took with Muse.

What Amazon is building instead
Amazon's own assistant is already big. Amazon says "over 400 million customers have used Alexa for Shopping in the last 12 months," and that the number using its agentic features "has grown more than eight times since the start of the year." On the October 29, 2026 earnings call, as reported by The Next Web, Jassy said: "we believe Alexa for Shopping is going to be the primary shopping agent customers use to shop Amazon." He also said that "few customers are doing much shopping this way yet, as the experience is still not great," and, per The Next Web, that outside agents weren't the reason advertising revenue, up 11%, came in below analysts' forecasts.

Amazon is also bringing outside stores into its own search. In March 2026, Amazon said its Shop Direct program listed over 100 million products from more than 400,000 merchants whose stores sit outside Amazon. PYMNTS reported on October 28, 2026, citing The Information, that Amazon had grown Shop Direct links 2.5 times, to 250 million.
Our read: optimize for the agent you can actually reach
A lot of "AI shopping" advice in 2026 has been about getting recommended by ChatGPT. That still matters for discovery off Amazon. But on Amazon, the blocks and the robots.txt file suggest outside agents aren't welcome, so the agent reading your detail page is Alexa for Shopping.
We'd plan around three things.
Detail pages written for questions, not keywords. A conversational assistant has to answer "is this safe for a 4-year-old" or "will this fit a 2019 RAV4" from what's on the page. Thin bullets stuffed with search terms give it nothing to work with. Specific answers, measurements and use cases do. This is the same work we do in listings and content, pointed at a new reader.
Subscriptions with less friction to pause. The new Subscribe & Save actions let a customer say "skip my next delivery" or "pause my subscription." Anything that makes skipping easier will show up in skip rates. For consumables brands, where the subscription is the business (the arithmetic is in our piece on why ROAS is the wrong number for consumables), we'd start tracking skips and pauses weekly and watch for a change after October 29, 2026.
A paid layer is coming. Amazon Ads plans to let brands sponsor conversations inside Alexa for Shopping from January 2027. We cover that, and the Review Requests format Amazon says opens in late October or November 2026, in our breakdown of Amazon's new AI ad formats.
What to do before the 2026 holidays
Agent-readiness check
- Ask Alexa for Shopping the ten questions your customer service team hears most about your hero products, and note where the answers are wrong or vague.
- Fix those gaps on the detail page itself: bullets, A+ content and specifications.
- Pull Subscribe & Save skip and cancellation rates by week for the last 90 days so you have a baseline before the holiday season.
- Check whether your off-Amazon store appears in Shop Direct results on Amazon, and decide whether you want it there.
- Keep optimizing for ChatGPT and Google AI search for off-Amazon discovery, but stop assuming those agents will complete purchases on Amazon.
Common questions
Can ChatGPT or other AI agents shop on Amazon?
Not with Amazon's blessing. As of November 4, 2026, Amazon's robots.txt file disallows OpenAI's GPTBot, ChatGPT-User and OAI-SearchBot, along with Google, Meta and Perplexity agents. Amazon blocked Meta's Muse agent on September 20, 2026, telling users that continued access by an unauthorized AI agent violates its Conditions of Use.
What is Alexa for Shopping?
It's Amazon's AI shopping assistant in the Amazon app and on Amazon.com. Amazon says over 400 million customers used it in the 12 months to October 2026, and on October 29, 2026 it added more than 100 new actions, including skipping or pausing Subscribe & Save deliveries.
What did the court say about Amazon blocking AI agents?
In August 2026 the Ninth Circuit vacated a preliminary injunction Amazon had won against Perplexity's Comet browser, finding Amazon unlikely to succeed because, on the facts before the court, the user, not Perplexity, accessed Amazon's systems under the anti-hacking laws Amazon cited. The court added that the ruling doesn't impair Amazon's ability to regulate access through its terms of service. The case continues.
How should brands optimize for AI shopping agents on Amazon?
Optimize for Amazon's own agent first, since that's the one Amazon lets onto its store. In practice that means complete, specific detail pages and answers to the questions shoppers actually ask, plus a plan for how subscription customers can now pause or skip by asking.
