How we source, verify and correct.

The rules behind everything in Insights. Short, because the rules are simple: primary sources, a named editor, and a fix when we get it wrong.

Who is responsible

Everything on this site is published under the editorship of Josh Grillo, Founder, Lead Brand Strategist. He is accountable for what appears here, answers every correction request personally, and his name is on every post. Sell Through is an independent agency. No marketplace, retail media network or software vendor pays for coverage, reviews copy before it runs, or has any say in what we publish.

What we cover, and how we choose it

We write about the Amazon marketplace first, and about Walmart, Instacart, Target, Kroger, Ulta, eBay and the wider e-commerce ecosystem when something there changes what a brand should do. Two kinds of piece appear in Insights:

  • News, marked with a News label. A news post is about something that happened within the previous 48 hours: an announcement, a policy taking effect, a filing, a ruling, a product launch, an earnings release. It carries the date of the event, not just the date we wrote it.
  • Guides and analysis, which are evergreen and get updated when the underlying facts change. An update is dated on the page.

We choose stories by one test: does a person running a brand on these marketplaces need to do something differently because of it? If the answer is no, we don’t cover it, however much attention it is getting elsewhere.

Sourcing

Every news post lists its sources at the end, with links. We go to the primary document wherever one exists: the Seller Central announcement, the SEC filing, the regulator’s press release, the court docket. Trade coverage is used to find stories and to add context, and is cited as such.

  • Every figure traces to a listed source, or the text says it is our own arithmetic and states the assumptions.
  • Quotes are verbatim and attributed. We don’t clean up, extend or paraphrase inside quotation marks.
  • Where sources disagree, we say so rather than pick the convenient one.
  • Where a document sits behind a login and we could only read a reproduction of it, the post says that.
  • Allegations are reported as allegations, with who made them. Nobody has broken a rule or a law until the body with the authority to say so has said so.

Verification, and how we use AI

We use AI tools to help research, draft and fact-check news posts. We think the honest thing is to say that plainly rather than pretend otherwise. What matters is the process around it:

  • Every claim, number, date and quote in a news post is checked against its source in a separate verification pass, by a reviewer that did not write the draft, before publication.
  • Anything that can’t be traced to a source is cut.
  • Every post is read for legal exposure: allegations stated as fact, claims about intent, advice we aren’t qualified to give.
  • Every link is checked before the post goes live, and the site’s checks run again on every build.
  • Josh Grillo is the editor responsible for the result, and the person to contact when we get something wrong.

The opinions in a post, usually under a heading like “Our read,” are ours. They come from running accounts, and we label them so a reader can tell the reporting from the view.

Corrections

If we got something wrong, tell us: Email us or 714-906-6322. We reply within one business day.

  • A factual error is fixed in the text and the post shows an updated date.
  • A material error, one that changes what a reader would do, also gets a note in the post saying what was wrong and what changed.
  • We don’t quietly delete posts. If a piece is withdrawn, the page says why.
  • Typos and wording fixes that don’t change meaning are made without a note.

Clients, conflicts and trademarks

We run marketplace accounts for brands, and we say so. A post never uses a client’s data, results or name without that client’s permission, and case studies are anonymized when the client asks. We don’t accept payment for coverage, we don’t use affiliate links, and we don’t review software we are paid to recommend.

Amazon, Walmart Connect, Instacart, Roundel, Kroger Precision Marketing and Ulta Beauty are trademarks of their respective owners. Sell Through is an independent agency and is not affiliated with or endorsed by any marketplace or retail media network.
